BOARD OF ED, CITY COUNCIL TO HOLD JOINT MEETING

The Lakewood Board of Education and the Lakewood City Council will hold their bi-annual joint meeting on Monday, Sept. 26 to give updates on and discuss issues of interest to both entities. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Lakewood City Hall in the auditorium.

FIRST FEDERAL COmmits to help fund new rec facilities

Superintendent Jeff Patterson announced at the Board’s Sept. 19 meeting that First Federal Lakewood has made a significant commitment of $692,000 to the Lakewood City Schools. The funds will go toward building an elevated indoor track for student and community use in the new Lakewood High School athletic wing, which is scheduled to open in Fall 2017. In addition, the bank committed another $150,000 in matching funds if the school district can raise $450,000 from other donors. That additional money would go toward building a Community Recreation Facility at Lakewood High School.

Rangers Education Foundation Holding Restaurant Raffle

To support programs that benefit Lakewood students at all levels as well as funding for teacher grants, the Lakewood Rangers Education Foundation is raffling off an "Eat Local Gift Card Bundle." For $25 per ticket or 5 for $100, you get a chance to win gift cards for 17 different local places. 

ATHLETIC BOOSTERS HOSTING CHIPOTLE FUNDRAISER SEPT. 27

Forget cooking on Tuesday, Sept. 27 and come to the Lakewood Chipotle instead. Half of the proceeds of your bill that day will go toward the Lakewood Athletic Boosters. Simply download and show this flyer or mention the Boosters when you order. Boosters support our athletes in so many ways, so let's get out and support them!

GARFIELD & HARDING HOSTING BLOOD DRIVES

Garfield and Harding Middle Schools are holding a friendly rivalry with their dueling American Red Cross blood drives in October. The principal in the school with the least donors will wear the other's school's shirt for a day! The Garfield drive is set for Monday, Oct. 3 from 3-7 pm and the Harding drive will be held on Monday, Oct. 17 from 2:30 - 7 pm. DISTRICT HOLDING ONLINE AUCTION OF FURNITURE

The Lakewood Board of Education will be conducting an online auction of used school building furniture beginning, Wednesday, Sept. 14 and will conclude on Friday, Oct. 7. HARDING TEACHER TURNS TO COMICS TO CONNECT

Teachers are always striving to make a connection with their students and looking to teach their curriculum in a way that engages the students, which is often easier said than done. While many educators and school districts are turning to technological tools to engage kids,Harding Middle School STEM teacher Laura Baillett has been creating curriculum content with a decidedly old-fashioned technique. Balliett has spent her past few summers creating curriculum in comic form.

SPIRIT PARADE KICKS OFF HOMECOMING WEEKEND SEPT. 30

The annual Lakewood City Schools Spirit Parade will kick off Homecoming Weekend on Friday, Sept. 30. The parade will step off from Lakewood Park at 5:30 pm and march its way through Lakewood to the North Lot at Lakewood High School. The parade is a great showcase of the district’s sports teams, clubs and organizations from elementary, middle and high school. The Rangers football game vs. Avon will cap off the evening at First Federal of Lakewood Stadium with kickoff at 7 pm.

DISTRICT PARTNERS WITH CITY FOR NEW TREE PROGRAM

Leave a legacy – and keep our school grounds green with trees! You can make a difference and give the gift that keeps on growing!  Your tax-deductible donation can make a difference in a student’s school experience. The Lakewood City Schools has teamed up with the City of Lakewood and Keep Lakewood Beautiful to launch Lakewood City Schools Gift-a-Tree Fund, which will allow donors to purchase trees for our school grounds.
