The Lakewood Project Taking its Show on the Road

Lakewood Project logoThe Lakewood Project, the Lakewood High electric rock orchestra, will be taking its show on the road! The group, the first of its kind in the country when it was formed in 2002, will be traveling to Delaware City Schools, Indian Hill Schools, and Ashland City Schools from March 22-24.

Board OKs Contract Extension with Support Staff Unions

The Lakewood Board of Education at its March 20, 2017 meeting approved two-year contract extensions with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) Local 129, which covers clerical staff and educational aides, and OAPSE 134, which covers custodial and maintenance staff.

LHS ARTISTS EARN NATIONAL AWARDS IN SCHOLASTIC CONTEST

maya and garrettLakewood High School senior Maya Sutliff has been named a national Gold Medal winner - the highest honor - in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, and senior Garrett Bodnar a Silver Medal winner.

LHS TALENT SHOW SET FOR MARCH 24 & 25

You have two nights to choose from: Friday, March 24 or Saturday, March 25. Show begins at 7 pm each night and tickets are $5. Proceeds go toward defraying the cost of Prom for the senior class.

LHS Braves the Shave event raises $12,000 for pediatric cancer

arianna in the chairThe students and staff of Lakewood High can hold their bald heads proud as they raised more than $12,000 for pediatric cancer research and St. Baldrick's Foundation at the school's LHS Braves the Shave event on March 16. About 30 students, teachers and other District employees and community members shaved their heads for the cause.

DARE Basketball tournament set for April 8

basketballThe Lakewood Police Department DARE basketball tournament is set for Saturday, April 8. The tournament tips off at 9 a.m., and the championship game begins at 2 p.m. This year’s tournament will take place in the gymnasium at Harding Middle School. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. 

SOPHOMORE CLASS CHIPOTLE FUNDRAISER MARCH 25

chiopitle logoThe Lakewood High sophomore class is hosting a fundraiser at the Lakewood Chipotle on Saturday, March 25th at 5:00-9:00 pm.  Mention the sophomore class and 50% of the sales will go toward the class.

BOARD BLDG. TO BE OFFERED FOR SALE AT PUBLIC AUCTION

The Lakewood City School District will offer for sale at public auction the Board Office building located at 1456 and 1470 Warren Road, Lakewood, Ohio 44107. The property will be auctioned on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at 4 p.m. (EST). Minimum bid is $850,000. Pre-registration is required and will begin at 3:30 p.m. A tour of the property is set for Friday, March 31 at 9:30 a.m.

ROTARY HONORS WEST SHORE'S OUTSTANDING STUDENTS

West Shore logoWest Shore Career-Technical District Outstanding Student Award recipients were honored by the Rotary Club of Lakewood and Rocky River at a luncheon on March 13 at the Don Umerley Civic Center in Rocky River. The 14 students, top performers in their career-technical programs, were chosen for their exemplary accomplishments in the classroom, school activities, clubs, athletics and service in the community. 

LHS MODEL UN CONFERENCE AWARDS INCLUDE TOP DELEGATE

Model UN logoThe Lakewood High School Model United Nations club recently completed their “season” with an outstanding showing at the Cleveland Council on World Affairs Conference at Case Western Reserve University March 7-8. Senior co-president Evan Suttell won the "Gavel" as the best delegate in his committee (the highest award), representing Ethiopia in the General Assembly.

DISTRICT STUDENTS SHINE IN NEO OHIO SCIENCE FAIR

science fair logoLakewood City Schools' eighth- and ninth-graders excelled at the annual Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair held March 6-9 at Cleveland State, led by five second-place winners for the District and several special award winners.

LHS WIND ENSEMBLE, 2 CHOIRS ADVANCE TO STATE COMPETITION

band instrumentsThe Lakewood High School Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Mixed Choir and the Symphonic Treble Choir all earned a 1 or Superior rating at the Ohio Music Education Association Large Band/Choir Adjudicated Event on March 11, earning the ensembles a trip to the High School State Large Group competition on April 28. The Symphonic Band and Men's Choir also did well, earning a 2 or Excellent rating. Only groups judged Superior move on to state competition. Congrats to all the musicians and directors Clinton Steinbrunner and Peter Hampton!

RANGERS EARN ALL-CONF. HONORS, INCLUDING 5 ON FIRST TEAM

RangermanWinter sports All-Conference teams for the Southwest Conference have been announced and there are plenty of Rangers represented! These honors are nice icing on the cake of a great winter sports season.

LINCOLN TRANSPORTED TO ALASKA FOR IDITAREAD WEEK

patchStudents at Lincoln Elementary this week were transported to the exciting world Nome, Alaska and the Iditarod – The Last Great Race through activities for the school’s IditaREAD week. Students even experienced what an authentic Iditarod sled looks and feels like.

MUSIC BOOSTERS RAISING FUNDS FOR NEW ARTS WING

music boostersThe Music Boosters are raising funds for equipment for the new LHS performing arts wing and have several fundraisers happening. On Thursday, March 16, Angelos's will donate 20% of your check to the Boosters. The offer is good on dine-in, carryout or delivery. The Boosters are also selling "hangers" to raise money to purchase a uniform storage conveyor system.

OPEN ENROLLMENT REQUESTS NOW BEING ACCEPTED

The open enrollment period for parents who wish to send their student to a school other than their assigned school for the 2017-2018 school year is now open. Parents have until March 30 to submit a request form. The first notification period will be from June 5-12 and the final notification round will be Aug. 14-18. Any questions? 2017-2018 Preschool Registration Now Open

abcsRegistration for the Lakewood City Schools' 2017-2018 5-star rated preschool program is now open. Students must be 3 or 4 years old before September 30, 2017, live in Lakewood and be potty-trained to be eligible for the program. Download this registration packet or pick up a packet at the Board of Education, 1470 Warren Road, in the Student Services Department on the second floor. For more information, call 216-529-4214.

You can make a difference and give the gift that keeps on growing!  Your tax-deductible donation can make a difference in a student’s school experience. The Lakewood City Schools has teamed up with the City of Lakewood and Keep Lakewood Beautiful to launch Lakewood City Schools Gift-a-Tree Fund, which will allow donors to purchase trees for our school grounds.
